Spier Winemakers Sundowners Event in Westcliff, Johannesburg
The annual Spier Winemakers Sundowners event was hosted at a private residence in Westcliff, Johannesburg this year and it was a real treat!
There was no launch, it was just an event to give people the chance to meet the winemakers at Spier. I had a great chat with Jacques Erasmus, the white winemaker. Jacques is the man who created the ‘oh-so-delicious’ Creative Block 2.
“A harmony of tastes and flavours, assembled from a handful of vineyard blocks, the 2014 vintage brought home the prestigious Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award.” – Spier
We discussed the effects of the severe drought on the harvests of this season. According to Jacques, we will only see the effects of the drought in about 2 years. For now, there is no telling what to expect just yet.
The Creative Block 2 was my drink of choice for the evening. It paired well with all the scrumptious vegetarian options at the food table. From grilled asparagus and pickled garlic mushrooms to an array of cheeses and fresh bread. It even went well with the decadent chocolate brownies, creamy fudge and varieties of nougat.
The wine is a Bordeaux-style blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and took just over 6 months to go from farm to table.
“Ripe kiwi fruit and white peaches on the nose with a strong intense green grassy undertone. Perfumed green winter melon, full plated wine with an undertow of green asparagus.”
I took so many pictures at the event, you can see them in the gallery below. As for the title image above, Elizabeth Cooper Photography captured it on the night. It is a snap of me going back for my second… or was it third, glass of Spier Creative Block 2.
If you are looking for a good but affordable white wine, the Creative Block 2 is a good choice.
