International Bloody Mary Day a.k.a Global Hangover survival guide!

So as you may have guessed the world as a whole feels hungover after celebrating the new year. So it would make absolute sense that the number one “hair of the dog” hangover cure gets its very own day on the 1st of January.

The Bloody Mary has always been a favourite cocktail of mine. The love started when I was about 6 or 7 and started flying from Cape Town to Johannesburg for school holidays. Having seen movies and adults order Tomato Cocktail on flights, I thought it was the fanciest thing to order as a kid. This was all long before I realised that the drink was way more than just Tomato Cocktail

As I got older, the love grew and to this day it is a go-to drink to end off a party mode. My best friend and I cherish the drink too and it now acts as a symbol for our younger, more reckless days.

The Bloody Mary has evolved over time and moved away from the classic vodka, tomato cocktail and celery combo. It now has more extravagant mixes. I personally still favour the classic style so I shall give you that recipe. However, I will also give you a few inspirations if you want to spruce it up!

The Bloody Mary shouldn’t be confused with the Caesar cocktail which is predominantly drunk in Canada. The drink uses the Caeser drink mix and celery salt. The drinks are basically the same as each other just the use of branded ingredients that makes the difference.

Bloody Mary extras

A classic Bloody Mary is made up of vodka, tomato cocktail, salt, pepper, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and celery. People have started omitting various bits and replacing them. Some have added pickle juice and herbs or on a skewer, added crispy bacon, jalapenos and olives. Below is my list of extras to add to spruce up your favourite hangover cure. You can add one or all, just make use of a toothpick or skewer.

  • Celery
  • Bacon
  • Green Olives
  • Chilli Popper
  • Pickles
  • Prawns
  • Salt Rim
  • Rosemary
  • Toasted Cheese Sandwich Wedge (No joke, I have seen these on Pinterest)

To me, a Bloody Mary always tastes like more and it really has saved my life more times than I can count. Thank you to whoever invented this delightful cocktail!

Lastly, Happy New Year!!! I hope 2020 is your year!

With My Love,

Bloody Mary

Prep Time: 10 mins

  • Bottle of Vodka
  • Bunch of Celery
  • 2 to 4 Boxes of Tomato Cocktail
  • Salt and Black Pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Tabasco or other Hot Sauce
  • Ice

My Method

A bloody mary comes down to personal preferences. If you like it hot, add more spice, if you like it salty add more salt. I base my first batch on how many people I am serving, if it's just two or less, I will make individual glasses to each person's preference. However, if more than two people want I will add a single vodka for each person into a jug (and then an extra tot just because) and do a basic salt and spice. Then serve with celery sticks and all condiments on the side so each person can adjust flavours.
